On Saturday, September 6, 2025, Ford Island will transform into hallowed ground as thousands gather for the Annual 8K Hero & Remembrance Run & Boot Memorial. This powerful, free event is held in honor of over 9,000 fallen service members from all branches of the military who have made the ultimate sacrifice since September 11, 2001.
Held on historic Ford Island in Hawaii, the event offers more than just a run — it is a moving tribute to courage, loss, and legacy.
A Memorial You Must See to Believe
Along the 8K route, the island’s roads will be lined with combat boots, each representing a fallen hero. Every boot includes a photo of the service member, their name, branch, and the date and location of their passing. These poignant tributes tell the stories of individuals who once stood in service to our nation — in combat, in garrison, and in non-combat roles.
Following the run, the boots will be reassembled on the corner of Enterprise & O'Kane streets, allowing participants and visitors to reflect, find loved ones, and take photos. This visual memorial will remain on display until September 13, 2025.
Event Highlights
Opening Ceremony at 6:30 a.m. will feature military and political leaders, as well as special guests.
Theresa Johnson, founder and host of the event, continues to lead the community in honoring the fallen.
Augie T, one of Hawaii’s favorite award-winning comedians, will serve as the Master of Ceremonies.
Motorcycle riders, “Patriot Guard”-style escorts, Wounded Warriors, and military units in formation will lead off the run.
Strollers, wagons, wheelchairs, and small children’s bikes are welcome. Friendly pets on leashes are also allowed.
While the run is not timed, everyone is encouraged to participate, whether walking, running, cheering from the sidelines, or volunteering.
